22:00
the other kids on the block. She
22:03
was glad to do the
22:05
thankless, unglamorous work that
22:07
for generations has strengthened the
22:10
fabric of this nation. The
22:13
belief that if you do unto
22:15
others, if you love thy neighbor,
22:17
if you work and scrape and
22:20
sacrifice, it will pay off. If
22:22
not for you, then maybe for
22:24
your children or your grandchildren. You
22:28
see, those values have
22:31
been passed on
22:34
through family farms and
22:36
factory towns, through tree-lined
22:38
streets and crowded tenements,
22:41
through prayer groups and National
22:43
Guard units and social studies
22:45
classrooms. Those were
22:47
the values my mother poured into
22:49
me until her very last breath.
22:54
Kamala Harris and I built
22:56
our lives on those same
22:58
foundational values. Even
23:01
though our mothers grew up in the ocean
23:03
apart, they shared
23:05
the same belief in the promise
23:07
of this country. That's
23:10
why her mother
23:12
moved here from India at 19. It's
23:16
why she taught Kamala about
23:18
justice, about the
23:20
obligation to lift others up, about
23:24
our responsibility to give more than
23:26
we take. She'd
23:29
often tell her daughter, don't
23:31
sit around and complain about things. Do
23:34
something. So
23:38
with that voice in her
23:41
head, Kamala went
23:43
out and she worked hard in
23:45
school graduating from an HBCU, earning
23:48
her law degree at a state
23:51
school. And
23:53
then she went on to work for
23:55
the people, fighting to
23:57
hold lawbreakers accountable, strengthening the
24:00
rule of law, fighting to
24:02
get folks better wages, cheaper
24:04
prescription drugs, a good education,
24:07
decent health care, child care,
24:09
elder care. From a
24:11
middle class household, Kamala worked her
24:14
way up to become Vice President
24:16
of the United States of America.
24:21
My girl,
24:24
Kamala Harris, is more
24:26
than ready for this moment. She
24:30
is one of the most
24:32
qualified people ever to seek the office
24:34
of the presidency. And
24:41
she is one of the
24:43
most dignified. A
24:45
tribute to her mother, to my mother, and
24:48
to your mother too. The
24:51
embodiment of
24:53
the stories we tell ourselves about
24:56
this country. Her story is
24:58
your story. It's my story.
25:01
It's the story of the vast
25:03
majority of Americans trying to
25:05
build a better life. Look
25:07
Kamala knows, like we do, that
25:10
regardless of where you come from, what you
25:12
look like, who you love, how you worship,
25:14
or what's in your bank account, we
25:16
all deserve the opportunity to
25:18
build a decent life. All
25:22
of our contributions deserve
25:24
to be accepted and
25:26
valued. Because
25:32
no one has a monopoly on
25:35
what it means to be an American.
25:37
No one. Kamala
25:46
has shown her allegiance to
25:48
this nation, not by spewing
25:50
anger and bitterness, but
25:53
by living a life of service and
25:56
always pushing the doors of opportunity
25:58
open to others. She
26:00
understands that most of
26:03
us will never be afforded the
26:05
grace of failing forward. We
26:08
will never benefit from the
26:10
affirmative action of generational wealth.
26:26
If we bankrupt a business or
26:29
choke in a crisis, we don't get
26:31
a second, third, or fourth chance. If
26:35
things don't go our
26:37
way, we don't
26:39
have the luxury of whining or cheating
26:41
others to get further ahead. No, we
26:46
don't get to change the rules
26:48
so we always win. If
26:50
we see a mountain in front of us, we
26:52
don't expect there to be an escalator waiting to
26:54
take us to the top. No,
26:57
we put our heads down. We
27:04
get to work. In
27:06
America, we do something.
27:11
And throughout her entire
27:13
life, that's what
27:16
we've seen from Kamala Harris. The
27:19
steel of her spine, the
27:22
steadiness of her upbringing, the honesty
27:24
of her example, and yes, the
27:27
joy of her laughter and her light.
27:33
It couldn't be more obvious. Of
27:36
the two major candidates in this race, only
27:39
Kamala Harris truly understands
27:41
the unseen labor and
27:43
unwavering commitment that has
27:45
always made America great. Now,
27:55
unfortunately, we
27:57
know what comes next. Shopify

39:29
Dot Com/podcast for. As
1:14:03
much as any
1:14:05
policy or program, I
1:14:09
believe that's what we yearn for. A
1:14:12
return to an America where we work together
1:14:15
and look out for each other. A
1:14:18
restoration of
1:14:21
what Lincoln
1:14:23
called on the eve of
1:14:25
Civil War, our
1:14:29
bonds of affection. An
1:14:32
America of the Teps, what he called
1:14:34
the bitter angels
1:14:36
of our nature. That
1:14:40
is what this election is about. And
1:14:44
I believe that's why if we each do
1:14:46
our part over the next 77 days,
1:14:49
if we knock on doors, if
1:14:51
we make phone calls, if we
1:14:53
talk to our friends, if
1:14:55
we listen to our neighbors, if
1:15:00
we work like we've never
1:15:02
worked before, if we
1:15:05
hold firm to our convictions, we
1:15:11
will elect Kamala Harris as the next
1:15:13
President of the United States and
1:15:16
Tim Woles as the next Vice President of
1:15:18
the United States. We
1:15:21
will elect leaders up and down
1:15:24
the ballot who will fight for
1:15:27
the hopeful, forward-looking America
1:15:29
we all believe in. And
1:15:31
together, we too will build
1:15:33
a country that is more secure
1:15:35
and more just, more
1:15:38
equal, and more free. So
1:15:41
let's get to work. God bless you. to
1:28:00
the idea of multiracial democracy because they accepted
1:28:02
it for eight years at some level. And
1:28:04
then really quickly to go to Michelle. Michelle
1:28:08
Obama was a tour de force tonight. We
1:28:10
were talking about this before, Alex and I,
1:28:12
that one of the things people often forget
1:28:15
is that as talented and brilliant
1:28:17
as Barack Obama is as an
1:28:19
orator, Michelle Obama is his
1:28:22
equal and every so often, sometimes
1:28:24
even better. Michelle Obama preached tonight.
1:28:27
She gave a sermon to this country. She
1:28:29
gave instructions and things that needed to be done.
1:28:31
And this audience ate it all the way up.
1:28:35
And the last thing I will say,
1:28:37
we also heard love stories tonight. It
1:28:39
is so rare to hear the kind of
1:28:42
deep and abiding love that we heard from
1:28:44
Doug M. Hock. Dougie loves Kamala. And
1:28:48
we got that full on and
1:28:50
we can also see that Barack
1:28:52
loves Michelle and they both loved
1:28:54
her mom. That love and
1:28:56
that joy, this room lit up with
1:28:58
it. And it is the reason that
1:29:00
they're doing so well on this democratic
1:29:02
side because they're bringing the love and
1:29:04
the joy and the family connection that
1:29:06
we lacked at that other convention. Yeah,
1:29:08
it is a that's it's very good.
1:29:10
You know, it's a really good point.
1:29:12
And it actually it feels like not
1:29:14
a bookend but a companion to the
1:29:17
We Love You, Joe. We love Joe. We love
1:29:19
Joe. So, point of love last night for
1:29:22
for President Biden on night one. And then
1:29:24
to have those love stories talked about on
1:29:27
night two, it does feel like companion pieces.
1:29:29
Now, speaking of love, I was sitting next
1:29:31
to Simone Sanders, former senior staffer
1:29:33
to Kamala Harris, who
1:29:35
was watching the Doug
1:29:38
Emhoff speech. And I thought you,
1:29:40
Simone Sanders Townsend, were going to crawl
1:29:43
out of your skin. I thought you
1:29:45
were going to leave your body. You
1:29:47
were so enthused by that speech. I
1:29:49
just you know, because
1:29:51
this is not what Doug
1:29:53
Emhoff signed up to do when he
1:29:55
went to law school. He did not
1:29:57
have this on his bingo card. And
1:30:00
I remember right after the
1:30:03
inauguration in 2020, and
1:30:05
the second gentleman then and the vice president, they
1:30:08
were gonna have to walk up these stairs and
1:30:11
do something. And as they were about to walk up, the
1:30:13
second gentleman was about to walk right with the vice president.
1:30:15
I'm like, no sir, you don't. I'm
1:30:17
like, somebody tell the staff that no one breathed
1:30:19
a second gentleman. He's like, to
1:30:22
see him standing on that stage tonight, he
1:30:24
was fully in his moment.
1:30:27
He was standing there. And oftentimes
1:30:30
you talk about spouses
1:30:32
supporting their, partner
1:30:34
who's in a powerful position. And I
1:30:37
frankly sometimes think we talk about it in
1:30:39
a place of, that it comes from a
1:30:41
place of weakness. And Doug Imhoff is a
1:30:43
strong person. He is a strong man who
1:30:45
has self assured someone who the vice president
1:30:47
leans on when for advice. He
1:30:51
is somebody, if you really wanna understand what is
1:30:53
going on or how to maybe get your point
1:30:55
across better, ask the second gentleman
1:30:58
because he is the best possible counsel.
1:31:00
And so to see him standing up
1:31:02
there tonight as an example
1:31:04
for so many people across the country,
1:31:06
because Doug Imhoff's family looks like a
1:31:08
lot of families. I am in a
1:31:10
blended family. Like I have a son,
1:31:12
I am a stepmother, but I have
1:31:14
a son. You know, so I just
1:31:17
thought it was amazing for America
1:31:19
to see that. Michelle LaVon Robinson
1:31:21
Obama, from the South side of
1:31:23
Chicago, honey, was on that stage tonight. And
1:31:26
yes, she preached, but frankly, I think that she
1:31:28
was fed up. She was fed up with Trump.
1:31:31
That's why in 2016, she went low. You
1:31:34
know, 2020, when they go low, 2016, when they go low,
1:31:36
we go high. She, today, she
1:31:38
looked him dead in the face and
1:31:41
gave America instructions. It was what
1:31:43
people needed to do. Can I just say this? I
1:31:45
just thought it was so striking to think about how
1:31:47
he started in a convention hall, as we all know.
1:31:49
And he gave a speech about red and blue. And
1:31:51
it's so, it was so striking to
1:31:54
have him update it to the algorithms, to the MAGA
1:31:56
divisions, to those attacks. He really spoke a bit about
1:31:58
you build a wall, then you feel low.
